PAPER CUT

Atlantic RAC Campaign 2006-2007

Most Recent Update

October 19th, a strong group (faculty/deans) at Dalhousie went to the President and Admin to pitch the idea of leaving the co-op to commit to reduction in paper use and use of post-consumer recycled paper. President Traves was enthusiastic about receiving proposals that would enhance Dalhousie’s reputation on environmental issues, particularly where they are well designed and not competing for scarce resources in the short term. So the notion that something might be designed that would demonstrate ‘win win’ thinking environmentally and economically was attractive.

They also went to a meeting of every Financial Officer of campuses in the Atlantic region and pitched the idea. So they have all heard of the idea! Now it's our job to come up with a feasible plan that they will accept. Here at Dalhousie there will be a team to think of creative economic solutions to reducing our environmental footprint via paper use.

Now there is research being done to create a purchasing plan for universities to switch to post-consumer, Forest Stewardship Certified paper and decrease consumption with a low, if not non-existant, economic cost. This si being done with Dalhousie University as a case study. Although this research is underway, action on individual campuses across the region is still needed.

The Plan from Here:

  1. Benchmarking (what has been tried successfully elsewhere in similar institutions)
  2. Internal research on paper purchasing systems at each campus
  3. External research on supply chain options for each campus
  4. Scheme design (focus on minimal/zero economic cost)Dalhousie as a case study

We will also need people to comment on the scheme once designed.
