October 26, 2006
Present: Jody, Katie, Zoë, Natalie, Elyse
Zoe: King’s Sierra Youth coalition’s Regional conference 27-29th of Januray, everyone should go.
Set up a wiki page (webpage), all campuses can post on the wiki page
Named paper cut, Password: papercut. Information on universities paper buying policies
Want Universities to buy 80%of there paper from local post consumer paper retailers. Each University to go on there own then come together,
Dalhousie to contract someone to come up with an economic scheme for a paper policy. Would like the policy to be a frame for other universities to follow. Bench marking, keeping each other informed of what is going down and learning from one another.
Website to be a communication tool for this.
Katie: How can we find out what is going on already with the paper purchasing.
Zoe: Set up a meeting with staff to bring up the idea of a policy, Gain Student support, and support from other universities as well.
Katie: Looking for sustainability coordinator to take on policy as a priority.
Zoe: It would be good to start off with some research of paper purchasing. How the University is purchasing paper and what kind of paper they are buying.
Website contains a tour that makes it easy to make changes, very user friendly, it you have any questions send them to Zoe.
Meet with administration, and possibly petition.
Meeting could be brief, and inquisitive, ask where to find the required information.
Katie, Memorials Administration is interested in paper policy. Do we have a coordinator for this Atlantic initiative?
Zoe: volunteered to be a coordinator. And it appears Zoe is to be the coordinator, any questions should be forwarded to Zoe.
Acadia: emailed university to find out if profs are wasting paper, (not double sideing, and whatnot). Found a calculator to find out the environmental impact of paper wasted. Will post paper calculator link on-line.
Zoe added page to website for each university to post advancements in paper reduction. Suggested to produce a petition.
New Brunswick: What would be the cost of using 100% post consumer paper?
Zoe: it will not be too expensive and they should be able to offset the cost, by reducing paper usage.
Katie: Our armies of volunteers can help reduce paper usage by community action and education.
Zoe: Moving on, we should talk about the format of these meetings.
Katie: I am going to need more information about CSAF and how to make presentations.
Zoie: CSAF is a good topic to talk about.
Katie: If any one else has done any presentations then they can share ideas on how things are going and what lessons have been learned.
Acadia: We had two paid positions for the summer (sustainability coordinator) not sure now
Zoe: Universities doing CSAF programs PEI UNB Dalhousie, Acadia
Katie: Memorial will be moving to do it in the future.
Zoe: There is lots of useful information on campus sustainability assessment framework, excel file on what universities are involved, she will e-mail it to everyone.
Contact info on-line, list-serve e-mail is there as well..
How often do we want to do calls, bi-weekly?
Katie: That sounds agreeable,
Zoe: We will use meeting wizard with lots more advance notice. I like meetin wizard.
Everyone: Agreed.
Zoe: any more Questions?
New Brunswick: nov 4, is Atlantic Climate Action day. They’re University is having a petition campaign, with the theme of a beach day in the cold to draw attention. Easy and cool. Needs a name? Event will take place on Friday. Where can I find the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition petition?
Zoe: At there website print out the declaration, and get the name and e-mail addresses of participants then enter it into the on-line petition.
Canadian youth climate coalition website. A lot of people have been getting together to sign the petition and kicking Climate ass
